Ray was born on November 24, 1918 to John Henry Schmutz (1878-1982) and Ada Cornelia Snow (1879-1956). He attended Dixie College where he was student body president for the academic year 1938-1939 where he met his vice president and future wife. He graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting in 1941 summa cum laude and was Salutatorian that year. While at BYU, Ray had a dance band called the Top Hatters. After returning to St. George, on October 21, 1941, he married Mary Louisa Wells. He farmed in the Washington fields and ranched on the Arizona Strip. During his life he served as an officer in the Washington County Canal Company for over 60 years. He died on September 16, 2007 in St. George, Utah.
